A famous engraving

This is an engraving done by artist John Sartain in 1865. The engraving depicts Abraham Lincoln being welcomed into heaven by George Washington.

  1. This painting is called " Great Emancipator" and was composed by Sartain to honor the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by Lincoln. Lincoln had indeed achieved a lot through out his career including freeing the slaves and inspiring a lot of people throughout their lifetime. Even in our generation today. The painting was done in black and white to emphasize the connection with the black and white abolitionists throughout the Union. Lincoln was indeed assassinated and had his life unexpectedly taken from him, but Washington was ill at the moment of which he passed. He was prepared for death and felt no regrets in his life and knew he had lived it fulfilligly. Needless to say that Lincoln had memorable achievements as well throughout his presidency. Lincoln took presideny in 1862 after Washington, 1789, therfore Washington is thankful for what Lincoln has done and achieved and is kindly embracing Lincoln's presence and life.

  2. Death and any part of the process it self is a difficult thing for most. I find that art and death go quite well together. People can look at a piece of art work in which the subject focuses on death and interpret it any way they wish. Views on death are different among any individual and I find that one single piece of art work can have thousands of different views by audiences and on lookers. In this particular engraving the meaning is fairly straight forward, but each viewer many see things in a different light.
